How to Play Blokus

These are the core rules for Blokus gameplay.

1. Players and board: Blokus is usually played by 4 players on a 20x20 board, with each player using one color and a full set of pieces.
2. First move: Your first piece must cover your own starting corner of the board.
3. Corner contact only: Your pieces of the same color can touch only at corners, never along full edges.
4. Edge contact with opponents: Your pieces may touch opponent pieces by edge or corner.
5. Turn order: Players take turns placing exactly one piece each turn.
6. No valid move: If you cannot place any remaining piece legally, you pass. Play continues for others.
7. Game end: The game ends when all players are blocked and no further legal moves are possible.
8. Scoring: You score based on unplayed squares left in your hand (fewer is better). In many versions, using all pieces gives a bonus.
9. Winning: The winner is the player with the best final score after all pieces are counted.

Blokus Strategy Tips

Expand early toward the center to maximize your future corner connections. Falling behind on central space often leads to being boxed in later.

Save a mix of large and small pieces. Large pieces claim territory efficiently, while small pieces are critical for escaping tight positions in the endgame.

Watch opponent corner access. Strong Blokus play is not only about growth but also about denying key diagonals and forcing difficult placements.

Plan two turns ahead whenever possible. Good players avoid flashy short-term moves that close their own routes and instead preserve flexibility across the board.
